At the time of the recording I was reapproaching the piano, stripping bare the first pre-conceived fundamentals to then listen, hear and feel just what sound meant to me again as a direct consequence through improvisation. Approaching the piano empty and willing to be vulnerable as an improviser, I sat down and began what would become a set of improvisations within neo-minimalism which began with, Beyond The Tenure Of Tears.
Since this subsequent performance, there is now an album that is nearing completion for 2019 from a selection of live performances, where it is just myself, the piano and in some cases, the audience. Improvisation is an integral creative process within my work since I first began playing piano many years ago, and it is and will always be a sanctuary to me when I am alone.
Direction Language is a collection of works that create one album. The individual compositions were released on Holm Records, combining music and poetry to create one medium. Many of the original compositions have featured worldwide upon radio or within compilations.
It was a late winters night in Germany and I decided to record my surroundings. I didn’t realise at the time that the recording would have a greater significance for me personally in the end.
The piano that is recorded is a prepared Bechstein piano. and the instrument is manipulated using various electronic treaments. The sound-recording is unedited and performed in its entirety.
When the Birth of Contemporary Electro-Acoustic Jazz was conceptualised, I had no idea how many people would embrace such ideas. Contemporary music is fluid, flexible, and very much forward thinking. This enables musicians to find their voice.
The compositions were orgingally concieved whilst Dee wrote his academic paper regarding the principles of electronic jazz related music. Both Forms went on to be supported worldwide upon radio and within art institutions. The recordings are also found on numerous Ibiza and electronic related albums.
When Tales From Love was written, it seemed over night to become an anthem within lounge music across Europe, and slowly found its place in America and beyond.
Tales From Love was utitlised by minimal electronic, acoustic music and poetry. The double A side went on to become supported worldwide by many of the most respected DJ’s in the world. It has since appeared on TV and compilation albums worldwide.
The Seafarers Tale is a combination of traditional oral melodies that I was introduced to when I first travelled to Greece. Over the years as I returned, I would repeatedly find myself listening to folk tales and songs of fisher-persons who had fished the surrounding seas. Over a period of time I began to perform these compositions on piano, and then decided to record them.
